The Arizona Kitchen has gone through quite the transformation since we first bought the house back in late August 2021. These updates have been purely cosmetic and will remain that way until we are able to fully renovate the space in a few years.
If you are new around here, the Arizona house is our VACATION HOME. We visit a few times a year and the rest of the time we list it as a short-term rental.
This past week I decided to take a little “mommy-cation” and jet away to our home away from home to do a few projects.
The Arizona kitchen plans
The kitchen was the big item on my list this trip. I loved the painted cabinets and changes in plumbing fixtures, hardware, and lighting that I completed last fall, but desperately felt like there was something missing: a backsplash!
The vision in my mind covered a large surface area in the kitchen. Not only the wall space between the countertop and uppers, but also above the uppers, around the door to the garage, and along the window wall that overlooks the pool.
We are planning on doing a full renovation in the Arizona kitchen in the next 2 to 4 years and a huge tile project seemed silly when it would likely be ripped down in the remodel.
I also have a huge opportunity in this home to stretch my brain as a designer and go further out of the box than I ever have. Renters in the area where our home is located are looking for unique features in a home that they rent. These homes tend to rent better and faster and keep people wanting more.
There will be no holding back in this home. I’ll be putting everything on the table to really give this home a WOW factor.
With this in mind, a pop of pattern and fun seemed like the perfect fit for this space. So the hunt for wallpaper began!
Choosing the perfect wallpaper
It took an extremely long time to hunt down the perfect paper. And I mean WEEKS!
Since wallpaper wasn’t in the original design of this space, it was even more challenging. There were already 5 paint colors, several patterned rugs, and printed textiles to consider. Not to mention another wallpaper print on the back of the peninsula cabinets.
Add in the triple threat of not being able to test the paper in the space before I ordered.
It was an expensive risk to take… but in the end, I just went for it.
I ended up going with a pre-pasted option from Jungalow.
The wallpaper install
As with any DIY project, install of the wallpaper came with a laundry list of pivots and challenges:
- First time installing pre-pasted wallpaper
- Dealing with an unexpected wave in the ceiling
- Risking running out of paper to be able to take a cabinet down and build open shelving in its place.
- Not to mention I had a plane home to catch so I was on a tight timeline.
The arizona kitchen reveal
In the end, everything turned out beautifully. STUNNING!
I am so excited about this transformation and I think you will be too…

You certainly got your WOW Factor!!! It is fabulous!
The paper is stunning, especially combined with the peninsula paper. and kitchen stools But combine that with the open shelves and it is really, really wonderful. Never would I guess that it wasn’t part of your original plan..
