Formal Living Room – One Room Challenge: Week 1 (the plan)

May 6, 2020

The spring One Room Challenge officially begins TODAY and I have decided to join in as a guest participant. If you are unfamiliar with ORC it is a bi-annual designer challenge where 20  featured designers and several guest participants will completely transform a space from start to finish in a short amount of time. ORC generally runs for 6 weeks but with the wrench that is the 2020 global pandemic, this round has been lengthened to 8 weeks.

Each week i’ll be documenting my progress here on the blog but you can head over to my Instagram stories to see the day to day changes that are happening in this space!

The living room currently. Our built-ins for this space never came in when our house was built.

If you are new around here it may be a surprise to find out that the “formal” living room in our (brand new) home that is sorely unfinished. I even hesitate to call it “formal” because our home is anything but that. It’s also the central walk through space from the entry, staircase, master bedroom and great room, so we have always just considered it an extension of our main living space.

Large windows look out to our back porch.

In a quick glimpse at my Instagram squares you may not be able to pick it out right away because I’ve done my best to hide it over the past two years of living here, but the truth of the matter is, it’s DRIVING ME CRAZY!

I’ve made this room work with random furniture the past two Christmases.

I’ve dreamed up plans for this space slowly over time but nothing truly felt right. It’s been that single room in the house that has really thrown me for a loop, with its large openings, large windows, boring paint color, terrible choice in light fixture and lack of built ins.

It took me a while to hunker down on what I truly wanted this space to be but in happy to finally say that I have amazing plans for this space! I’ll be repainting, building benches for the blank nooks, installing baseboards, wallpaper, new light fixtures and adding furniture that fits perfectly in the space. If I catch a wild hair (and have time at the end) id love to also build double barn doors as an optional element to close off the space from the great room if needed.

HERE IS THE DESIGN!!!!!

Over these next 8 weeks ill be transforming this boring, unfinished walk through into a statement living space that my family will LOVE!! I hope you join me for the journey as I document it on Instagram and here on the blog. You can head over to the One Room Challenge website to check out other designers participating in the challenge as well!
