In 2023, my oldest became a teenager. In an instant, her interest in makeup and beauty skyrocketed. If you took a peek at her holiday wish list last year, you would’ve found a makeup vanity, makeup vanity organization and Sephora gift cards were high priorities.
And I had zero complaints about it! I LOVE when my kiddos understand the importance of functional spaces, and this teenage makeup vanity project fit the bill. Making their wishes come to life with a little DIY love is part of the fun, too. I was thrilled to search for the perfect furniture piece and gather up some makeup vanity organization ideas. DIY special touches were going to grace this vanity from top to bottom!
DIY Makeup Vanity for Teen Bedroom
My daughter is a planner, so I knew what was on her Christmas wish list long before Thanksgiving. It gave me plenty of time to gather DIY makeup vanity ideas and scour Facebook Marketplace for the perfect piece of furniture.
Half the battle is finding the furniture piece for a DIY makeup vanity. I knew I wanted it to have a lot of storage, and it needed to fit in a specific corner of her room. During Thanksgiving weekend 2023, I scored big!
BEFORE
I snagged this solid wood desk for $80! It was in great condition, had plenty of storage and had just recently been painted. The color scheme didn’t fit her space, so I planned to repaint and personalize it with a few special details I knew she’d love.
DIY Makeup Vanity Makeover
The first step in my DIY makeup vanity plans was painting. My method for painting furniture is almost exactly the same as my method for painting cabinets (FULL TUTORIAL HERE). All it takes is a light sanding, bonding primer, more light sanding and two coats of paint.
As for the special details, one example is the sides of the vanity, which I covered with pole wrap for a modern texture and interesting detail. I finished the entire piece with two coats of clear, satin polycrylic for a protective finish.
