Over the past 9 months I have been updating our 90’s cosmetic fixer in Phoenix, Arizona.
I’ve finally made it to the primary bedroom! I’m a firm believer that this space in the home should be a quiet, calm escape as the end of the day. Unfortunately, Ive lived in to many homes where this space did not become a priority for a long time..
In this new house, I was determined to give it life and personality within the first year.
The primary bedroom before
Here are a few PRIMARY bedroom photos from when we purchased our home:
A lot has happened in this space since these photos were taken in August of 2022.
We started with (very) basic furnishings: a bed, rug, nightstands and a dresser knowing that it would only be a few months until I could do paint and floors. . Then we had the GREAT MOLD TRAGEDY in the fall of 2022. WE had to rip out all of the drywall and flooring underneath every window in the house to remediate a massive amount of mold. Unfortunarely that left this space with half old laminate and half plywood floors FOR SIX MONTHS!
Shortly after the holidays I started phase one makeovers in the upstairs bedrooms (literally to just make them functional), and as the order worked out, the primary bedroom was last on the list.
The timing of this bedroom makeover couldnt have been more perfect. It fell just two weeks before my husband returned home from being gone for 3.5 months for work. .
I was thrilled to surprise him!
primary bedroom paint colors
I ripped out all of the trim and baseboards before we even moved into the home, knowing that new floors were only a few short months away.
It was easiest for me to go ahead start with ceiling wall paint since the floors were being replaced anyway, and I didn’t have to worry about keeping them clean.
I started with the ceiling and chose a non traditional color (Breezeway by Behr) in a flat finish. Painting the ceiling a color is a great way to incorporate a non traditional accent wall into a space.
Next came the walls. I chose the color Light Beige (a warm creamy white) by Dunn Edwards in a velvet finish. Painting the walls a neutral color after doing the ceiling in an accent color really makes the ceiling pop and prevents the walls and ceiling from competing against each other.
I did have to replace the floors before re installing the door trim and baseboards, and one complete I painted them the same color as the ceiling, just in a semi-gloss finish.
Painting tip for textured walls
I always get asked ton of painting tips when I paint a room. Here is a great tip for getting clean cut lines when you have textured walls!

installing floors in the primary bedroom
Next came the new floors. I have been tearing out the old cheery laminate one room at a time and replacing it with Dura Decor Rigid Core Click and Lock LVP flooring in the color Golden Glow. It is a beautiful, modern LVP flooring that is completely DIY friendly. You can read my full review of the product HERE.
our primary Bedroom furniture, lighting & Decor
I wanted this space to be light, airy with good balance of masculine and feminine elements. I combined midcentury accent pieces and modern boho fabrics to achieve this look.

My husbands reaction to the primary bedroom
I worked on the finishing touches of the bedroom until nearly midnight the night before my husband arrived home. I was so excited to surprise him with this space and his reaction says it all!
primary bedroom REveal
Two weeks of work on the ceiling, walls, trim and floors. A few new furnishings and this phase one makeover is complete!
To be honest I’m pretty content with this room for now. I can definitely see adding some framed photos, a full length mirror and some automated shades in the future, but as far as big projects, I’m not having any big dreams just yet.
The primary bathroom on the other hand….thats another story!
